Wayne D.
Thompson
June 20, 1935 – August 14, 2015
Wayne D. Thompson, 80, of Rochester, MN, died peacefully in his home on Friday, August 14, 2015.
The Funeral Mass will be at 11:00AM, Tuesday, August 18, 2015 at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 1114 3 rd Street SE, Rochester, MN with Rev. Mark McNea officiating. Visitation will be from 5:00-8:00PM on Monday, August 17, 2015 in River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home and also one hour prior to the Mass on Tuesday at the church. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Rochester.
Wayne was born June 20, 1935 in Porter, MN to Herman and Elva Thompson (in the same bedroom as his dad was born). After graduating from Canby High School in 1953, he attended the University of Minnesota. After serving in the Army for 3 years, he returned to farming near Canby and met his bride to be, Cecilia Sik. They were wed on November 20, 1961 in Wilno, MN and have enjoyed 53 years of marriage.
When he was younger, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and his 57 Chevy (it is alleged that he drove too fast). He played the accordion, gave lessons, and was even on the radio. He was active in church as a religion teacher, singing in the choir, commentator, and Eucharistic Minister. He enjoyed reading and was always up on current events. He enjoyed meeting new people and was a great conversationalist. He enjoyed camping, traveling, and a hot air balloon over Rochester. He especially enjoyed their trip to Alaska. But above all, he loved his family. If there was a family event, he was there.
During his life, he farmed, sold MoorMan's feed and Knights of Columbus insurance, worked for Watkins, Big Stone Cheese Factory, Arnold's Supply & Kleenit, and Rochester Athletic Club. He was part owner of a restaurant.
He is survived by his loving wife Cecilia; one daughter Violet (David) Rabaey of Chili, WI; three sons, Vernon (Sharon) Thompson of Rochester, MN, Virgil (Lisa) Thompson of Roanoke, VA, Vincent (Deanna) Thompson of Humble, TX; and one sister Janice Deneen of Deer Park, WA. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Amanda and Abigail Thompson, Christopher (Katharyn) Pearson, and Davis and Conner Thompson.
He is preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Wilma Thompson and Vera Evenson.
