July 27, 1959 – June 1, 2018
Steven E. Szuberski, 58, of Rochester, died Friday, June 1, 2018 from complications of Alzheimer's disease. He was surrounded by his family who cared for him at home.
Steven was born July 27, 1959 in Rochester, MN to Eugene and Joan (Bannon) Szuberski. He was the oldest child and had five younger siblings. Steve grew up in Rochester and graduated from Mayo High School in 1977. As a senior in high school, Steve took 1st place in the State VICA (Vocational and Industrial Clubs of America) competition and 3rd place in the National VICA competition. He was hired right out of high school by Kruse Lumber Company to work as an architectural draftsman. In 1983, Steve returned to school and attended Rochester Vocational School. He graduated top of his class as a chemical laboratory technician. Steve was immediately hired by Rochester Materials Company to work as their product & quality control and safety inspector. In 1987, Steve became an employee of the City of Rochester, Department of Public Works. There he worked in permits and survey & construction inspection on bridges and roads, a job he dearly loved and held until he was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's disease at the age of 52.
Steve married the love of his life, Brenda Kirchner, at Bethel Lutheran Church in Rochester, MN on September 22, 1979. They had three beautiful children, Jessica, Aaron, and Victoria (Tori). Steve was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. Family meant the world to Steve and he loved helping his kids with special projects, attending archery shoots and camping together, or taking family vacations.
Steve's faith was important to him and he always had a fruitful ambition to serve others. He worked as the Sunday School superintendent at Bethel Lutheran Church for years. Steven and Brenda felt a calling to help establish a new Lutheran church in Eyota. Steve and Brenda became charter members of the church and Steve devoted much of his time, serving as a council member, a member of their finance team, and a member of the properties committee.
Steve had many hobbies. He loved to bowl, compete in archery shoots, gun and archery hunt, fish Minnesota lakes and streams, ride motorcycle, and work on projects in his garage. Steve had a big heart and loved making others feel comfortable and happy. He will be remembered for his genuine kindness and big smile.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff from Season's Hospice; Laura Miller and Barb Kirchner, his special caregivers; and Dave Lucas, his long-time friend and co-worker, who frequently picked him up and took him for coffee or out on long rides.
Steven is survived by his wife, Brenda; his three children, Jessica (Eric Huey) Szuberski of Rochester, Aaron (Angelina Keisla) Szuberski of Rush City, and Tori (Adam) Kinsley of Stewartville; his three grandsons, Araylius, Archer, and Maddox; his two brothers, Michael (Denette) Szuberski of Byron, and Mark (Stacey) Szuberski of Rochester; and his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Charles and Phyllis Kirchner of Rochester; two sisters-in-law, Barb Kirchner of Rochester, and Deanna Szuberski of Claremont; two brothers-in-law, Greg (Rita) Kirchner of Elgin, and Nick Kirchner of Duluth.
