Obituary

Stanley A. Campbell, age 99, of rural Rochester, died Saturday, May 1, 2021 at home, surrounded by family.  Stanley was born May 1, 1922 in Pleasant Grove, the son of Howard & Freeda (Butlin) Campbell.  Stanley attended school into his 9 th grade at which time he became ill and unable to finish the year.  He never returned to school, but instead stayed home to help on the family farm.

He married Veleita I. Mason on January 27, 1943 in California. Stanley was serving in the Army Air Force, stationed in Glendale, California at the time they were married. Stanley started active service on October 24, 1942, starting at Camp Dodge, Iowa.  He served in Italy, Southern France, and Africa during WWII as an aero propellor mechanic.  He received an honorable discharge as a Staff Sargent on September 28, 1945.  He was extremely proud of being a WWII vet and loved talking about his fellow vets and time served.  Upon returning home he and Veleita opened a small grocery store in the village of Marion, which they owned until 1969.  During that same time, Stanley worked as a substitute rural mail carrier and in maintenance at the State Hospital in Rochester. When the state hospital was closed in Rochester, he moved to St. Peter, MN to work at the mental facility there until retiring in 1985.

Following his retirement, Stanley spent most of his summers in Park Rapids.  He loved spending time outdoors in his flower gardens, fishing, feeding & watching birds and with his dog, Bonnie.  He was an active member of the Marion Road Christian Church the majority of his life. Stanley was also a loyal member of the Pleasant Grove Masonic Lodge for over 75 years.

Stanley is survived by his children, Karen Flury, Linda (Chuck) Lunde, Howard (Nancy) Campbell, and Donna (Jim) Williams-Loehr; grandchildren, Rainie (Rick) Tufty, Lynette (Shane) Lacey, Jake (Jana) Lunde, Sam Campbell, Pat (Krystal) Campbell, Joe (Carrie) Campbell, Drew (Amy) Williams, Colin (Anne) Williams, Brian Loehr and Brad Loehr; great-grandchildren, Kadie Ketchum & Kolton Tufty, Abbe & Kylie Lacey, Mya, Charlie & Lily Lunde, Parker, Lydia, Julia, Alayna & Cynthia Campbell, Jackson, Mason & Cooper Campbell; Waylon Williams, Tucker & Huck Williams, Kyra, Kadyn & Baron Loehr. Stanley is also survived by his brother, Curtis Campbell of Spokane, Washington, along with several nieces and nephews.

We extend a special thank you to his niece (our cousin) Lynn, who left her life in Wisconsin to provide around the clock home care for our dad for these past 2½ years.  His desire was to remain in his home and with her devotion to him & his care, he was able to do that.
