Samuel "Sam" James King, 23, of Rochester, passed away unexpectedly while serving his country during military training. Sam was born on March 4, 2003, in Rochester, Minnesota, to James "Jay" King Jr. and Vanessa (Attleson) King.

Sam was a 2021 graduate of John Marshall High School in Rochester. Following high school, he attended Rochester Community and Technical College, where he earned his Associate of Science degree in 2023. A dedicated athlete from an early age, Sam began playing organized hockey at the age of five and continued through high school, serving as team captain during his senior year.

Those who knew Sam will remember him as a quiet, gentle giant, a man of few words whose presence spoke volumes. An old soul, Sam listened more than he spoke, taking in the world around him with thoughtfulness and compassion. His warm smile had a way of making everything and everyone around him better.

Sam loved the outdoors, whether kayaking, fishing, swimming, or simply spending time by the water, he felt most at home in nature. After moving to North Carolina, he developed a passion for golf and could often be found on the course each week. He also enjoyed hiking, spending time at the gun range, listening to music, and cooking, especially cooking for family and friends. No meal was complete without ice cream, particularly his favorite, Ben & Jerry's.

Sam had a remarkable gift for encouraging others. He quietly lifted up those who lacked confidence, helping them believe in themselves and inspiring them to persevere. He was often the deciding factor among friends, if Sam was going, everyone else wanted to go too. He cherished his friendships deeply, loved having a good time, and equally treasured life's quieter moments.

Guided by his personal mottos, "Be your own man" and "Take the stairs," Sam approached life with determination, integrity, and purpose. Once he found his calling, he pursued it wholeheartedly. Wanting to serve others and make a difference in the world, Sam enlisted in the United States Army on April 1, 2025. He graduated from Basic Training on September 12, 2025 as an Infantryman, completed Airborne School, and on March 6, 2026, was selected to attend the prestigious Green Beret Special Forces Qualification Course. Sam often expressed gratitude for the Army and the opportunities it provided, striving always to be the best in everything he did. He possessed the character, curiosity, grit, and the "it" factor that embodied what it means to become a Green Beret.

Above all else, Sam loved his family. He shared a special bond with his sister, Andria, adored his faithful dog, Felix, and treasured the time spent with those he loved.

Sam is survived by his parents, Jay and Vanessa King; his sister, Andria (Joey Olson); paternal grandparents, James Sr. and Judie King; aunt, Jody King; uncles, Dennis Attleson, Joe (Sandy) Attleson, and John (Kandi) Attleson; as well as numerous cousins, extended family members, and many dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Don "Sam" and Betty Attleson; and his uncle, Dean Attleson.

A funeral service for Sam will be held 12:00 p.m. July 3, 2026 in the River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home, 1105 12th Street SE, Rochester, Minnesota. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service.

Sam's legacy of service, courage, and devotion to family and country will be remembered by all who knew him.
