Ruth M.
Nevling
November 10, 1922 – October 5, 2014
Ruth M. Nevling, 91, of Rochester, died October 5, 2014 at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester due to complications following hip surgery.
Margaret Ruth Ann was born on November 10, 1922 to Esther (Boyer) and Mathew Mulvihill in Chester, Minnesota.
As everyone called her Ruth, she legally changed her name. She married Edwin Reid Nevling and divorced after 5 years. Ruth was a 4-H leader during her children's growing years. When IBM came to Rochester, Ruth was hired into the cafeteria. After reaching the 'glass ceiling' there, she transferred to manufacturing. After working in assembly and bank proof, she moved into the lab and formulated glues and grinding compounds. She was the first woman retiree from IBM Rochester with over 25 years of service. She went on to be the first president of the IBM Retirees' club. During her early retirement years she volunteered to coordinate the AARP "55 Alive" program in SE Minnesota. She provided leadership and support for many organizations. Ruth was one of the initiators of the local law enforcement "Triad" program. Triad is support and interaction between seniors, sheriff and police. She is a life member of the VFW Auxiliary and Rochester Senior Center. For many years she was the block representative for many fundraising appeals and enjoyed getting to know her neighbors.
During her later years she remained active in the Olmsted Medical Center Hospital Auxiliary, a regular volunteer in the gift shop and other duties.
She is survived by her children who reside locally: Jean M. (Gordon) Gooderum, after 40 years in the Twin Cities, in Stewartville, Karen A. (Larry) Glynn of rural Eyota, and Harry R. (Joanne) Nevling, after 25 years in Longmont Colorado, in Rochester. She is also survived by four grandchildren and two nieces.
Ruth was preceded in death by her parents and her only sibling Harry Mulvihill.
