Obituary

Bob Gluek, 85, passed away peacefully from congestive heart failure at his home in Mantorville on June 13, 2017, surrounded by his loving wife and family.

Bob was born January 18, 1932, in Minneapolis to Eugene and Gertrude Gluek. The family moved to Hopkins and Bob attended Blake School. During high school he worked summers at the family business, Gluek Brewing Company, and played football and hockey well into his college years.

In 1950, he began studies for his business degree at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire.

In 1954, Bob married his high school sweetheart, Judy Cleveland, from Wayzata.  He then served in the United States Navy for two years before completing the final year of his five-year program for his MBA from Dartmouth. Bob and Judy lived in several places during their 63 years of marriage including California, New Hampshire, New Jersey, and Illinois before ultimately moving to Rochester, Minnesota where they raised their seven children.

Most of Bob's career was spent at the Mayo Clinic as a business administrator for various departments, the highlight being his work with the oncology department where he continued to volunteer after his retirement in January 1994 until a week before his death.

Bob had many passions throughout his life.  In his youth, Bob loved sailing and he spent numerous summers competing in Inner-Lake Yachting Association (ILYA) events. In the winters, he would spend his time on skis, and Bob and Judy took their family on many Rocky Mountain vacations.  Later, Bob became an experienced horseman who rode in dressage competitions (a passion also shared by his wife and children) and avidly embraced the game of golf.  Bob and Judy enjoyed spending time laughing and celebrating with their family and friends. In quiet times, you could find him reading or doing crossword puzzles at their cabin in Hayward, Wisconsin.

Bob was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend to many. He is survived by his wife, Judy, and their seven adult children, Terry Gluek (Mark Milner), Carol (Bob) Petersen, Lisa Gluek (Jamer Kelley), Charlie (Jenny) Gluek, Sarah Gluek (Greg Smith), Karla Gluek (Jim Sorboro), and Gretchen (Rich) Del Bianco; 18 grandchildren and their spouses; 14 great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, John, his sister Jeanette, and their spouses, as well as his great-granddaughter, Morgan Wilke.

The funeral Mass for Bob Gluek will be 10:00 am on Monday, June 19, 2017, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Rochester, MN with Rev. MSGR Gerald A. Mahon officiating.
