Robert C.
Daly
June 17, 1928 – December 29, 2014
Robert Cecil Daly, 86, passed away on December 29, 2014 at Saint Mary's Hospital. Robert was born, June 17, 1928 to the late Robert W and Constance Daly of Rochester. "Bob" was a lifelong resident of Rochester. After graduating from Rochester High School in 1946, he attended Rochester Community College for two years. He went into the Navy and became a Hospital Corpsman in Norfolk, Virginia and then served on the aircraft carrier "USS WASP" during the Korean War. Following his discharge, he attended and graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in Mortuary Science. After returning to Rochester, he worked for the Olmsted County Health department for a couple years, and then Bob entered the Rochester Police Force. However, he retained his certification to practice mortuary science for over 58 years, something he was very proud of. He enjoyed a lifelong friendship and part-time work with Macken Funeral Home. During his police career, he was a Police Officer for many years, moving on to juvenile detective, and then to the adult detective division before retiring in 1986 with 29 years on the Rochester force.
In 1956 he married Dorothy Anne (Whelan) Daly. Bob Daly's first and foremost love was family. Nothing meant more to him than to spend time with his family, especially on the North Shore of Lake Superior. In addition to being on the police force, Bob was a long-time member of the Rochester Police Pistol team, continuing to compete long after his retirement from the force, earning the level of Distinguished Master. He and his wife Dorothy would help with the organization and scoring of the various tournaments within the region as well as at the state level. Bob was a lifetime member of the Elks, and played the drum in their Drum & Bugle corps for 36 years. He also loved going to National Drum& Bugle corps competitions whenever they appeared in the region. He loved cars and always had to keep track of gas prices, both locally and when talking with his kids, wherever they happened to be. He loved to watch golf on TV and always had a soft spot for the "old-timers" rather than the young up and comers.
Bob is survived by his four children: Steve Daly of Maple Grove, MN; Tom Daly of Manhattan Beach, CA; Peggy (Bryan) Ashley of Kennesaw, GA; and Tim (Karen Fiksdal) Daly of Rochester, MN; as well as seven beloved grandchildren, John Ashley, Kevin Daly, Rob Ashley, Ted Daly, Lizzy Ashley, Kita Daly, and Maia Daly. He is also survived by his sister Barbara Daly.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Dorothy.
A funeral Mass for Robert C. Daly will be held on Friday, January 2nd at 11:00AM, in the River Park Chapel, Macken Funeral Home with the Rev. Harry Jewison officiating. Visitation will occur one hour prior to the service, and a luncheon will follow the service. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery.
Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the Rochester Police Benevolent Fund.
