Richard "Rich" Tulius, 87, a longtime resident of Rochester, MN died peacefully at his home on December 17, 2019. Richard had just enjoyed a Thanksgiving celebration at his home last month with over 22 family and friends in attendance, including his nephew, Bobby Wener, who was his last surviving blood relative.
Richard was born in Dodge, Wisconsin in 1932 and graduated from Arcadia Wisconsin High School in 1951. He married his high school sweetheart Marjorie (Fernholz). They lived in Bluff Siding and Buffalo City Wisconsin until the early 1970's when they relocated to Rochester for work.
Richard was a drill instructor in the United States Army during the Korean War, and had a distinguished and decorated army career. Richard was recommended by his commanding officer to attend Officer Candidate School, but decided to leave the military to pursue other opportunities.
Richard began his career in the building trades where he started as a plumber, working for Local 6 in SE Minnesota. Upon his move to Rochester, he became the Business Manager for Local 6, a position he held until his retirement in the mid-1990s. Richard's hard work was instrumental in development of training facilities and pension plans for Local 6.
Richard was an avid hunter and angler. He enjoyed his many years at his second home on the lake in Western Wisconsin, before settling in permanently in Rochester.
Richard is survived by his wife Marjorie. Richard and Marjorie celebrated their 67 th wedding anniversary this past October. Marjorie has worked tirelessly caring for Richard in their home these many years. They have one son, Scott (Davis), a retired police lieutenant with the Rochester Police Department, who resides in Orlando FL; one granddaughter, Samantha (Eaker), a nurse in Rochester; and just recently a new great grandson, Emmett (Eaker).
He is preceded in death by his sister, Gert (Wener).
A celebration of life will take place to remember Richard. All those that knew Richard and Marjorie, as well as their son Scott and Granddaughter Samantha, are invited to attend. It will be held in The River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home, in Rochester on Sunday December 22, 2019 from 12 p.m. – 1 p.m. A memorial service will follow at 1 p.m.
