Nathaniel James Hermes, a devoted Catholic and child of God, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday, July 21st, 2026. Nate, 38, of Rochester, MN was born on November 21st, 1987 in St. Paul, MN to Jim and Julie (Cunningham) Hermes. At two years old, he moved to Rochester with his parents where he lived for the remainder of his life. He graduated from Mayo High School in 2006 and went on to earn his Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics and computer science at the University of Minnesota – Duluth, graduating in 3.5 years in 2009. During his 12-year career at IBM as a software engineer, he found fulfillment in his contributions to many significant projects working alongside his team members.

Despite a rare genetic diagnosis of Hajdu-Cheney syndrome and multiple physical disabilities, he defied the odds by living 38 years, overcoming numerous medical trials including 35 plus surgeries in his lifetime. His faith was at the center of his life and only strengthened with every challenge. To know Nate was to know unconditional love, generosity, and positivity. He was a listener, had a great sense of humor, and was remarkably brave.

He was a proud condo owner, where he lived independently for over 10 years. He was most joyful when reading science fiction/fantasy books including an all-time favorite of Harry Potter, playing board and card games with Carbles being his most recent obsession, watching movies, building computers, finding the best Amazon deals, cross-stitching, cricut-ing with his mom, and giving the most thoughtful gifts to his loved ones. Most of all he cherished his time with his family. He was the most loving and supportive big brother. 4.5 years ago Nate achieved his most treasured title, Uncle Nate. He was happiest playing, giving gifts, and eating treats with his niece and nephews. Nate changed the lives of everyone he met.

He is survived by his loving parents, Jim and Julie Hermes; grandmother Jeanette Cunningham; siblings Zachariah Hermes, Emma (Matt) Cyr, Madeline (Eric) Rueb; his ever-adored niece and nephews, Mabel Cyr, Roy Nathaniel Cyr, Elliot Rueb, and one more Cyr on the way; along with many cherished aunts, uncles, cousins, and his closest friends Bart, Wendy, Sawyer, Britta and Gunnar Hanson.

He is preceded in death by his grandparents, Dick and Peggy Hermes, and Marvin Cunningham, who were undoubtedly waiting with open arms at the gates of heaven.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Make a Wish - Minnesota or Hajdu-Cheney syndrome research. Make a Wish provides an opportunity for children with chronic or critical conditions and their families to enjoy special, once-in-a-lifetime experiences together. Nate and his family were granted a wish in 2003 to Disney World and Universal Studios. The National Organization for Rare disorders funds independent research and patient support for Hajdu-Cheney syndrome. A Memorial Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 29, 2026, at the Church of the Resurrection Catholic Church. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 28, 2026, at the church, and again one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery in Owatonna, MN.
