Nan Louise
Bailey Sawyer
July 8, 1955 – May 22, 2013
Nan Louise Bailey Sawyer lost her battle with breast cancer on May 22, 2013. Nan was born July 8, 1955, in Poughkeepsie, New York, the youngest daughter of Mary Abigail Johnson and Wilbur Wayne Bailey. She was salutatorian of her 1973 high school class at The Sayre School in Lexington, Kentucky. That fall she attended Western Kentucky University, emphasizing a pre-pharmacy curriculum. She was admitted to the University of Kentucky's School of Pharmacy in the fall of 1975, and graduated in 1978. Nan married Daniel Dale Sawyer, the youngest son of Iris Ilene Guymon and Forrest Ray Sawyer, on August 5, 1978. She began her pharmacy career in Louisville, Kentucky immediately following their honeymoon. Nan relocated to Jacksonville, Florida in October of 1979, continuing her career in pharmacy; initially at Atwood and Rogers, then as pharmacy manager at Riverside Hospital. In September of 1986, Nan began her 26 year Mayo career, at Mayo Clinic Florida, as the first pharmacist hired by the Foundation. In 1988, she was offered a new challenge: Clinic administration. Nan earned an M.B.A. from the University of North Florida in 1995, as she progressed further into leadership roles. Nan joined the Mayo Clinic Rochester leadership team in September of 2005. In November of that year, she was diagnosed and began her undaunted battle with breast cancer. Nan's family is immensely grateful to the loving care provided by the Mayo Clinic staff and the vast resources accessed during her seven year battle. At the time of her passing, Nan was Chair – Department of Practice Administration, responsible for practice operations for Mayo Clinic. Nan was committed to Mayo Clinic's mission, and truly loved and respected her colleagues; she will be remembered as a wise, inspirational, collaborative leader and a selfless, team builder; a person arriving at work with an ever positive perspective, a joyous spirit, a smile and a twinkle in her lovely blue eyes. It has been said by many people that anyone spending much time in her company loved her dearly.
An admitted tomboy, Nan loved sports; her Kentucky Wildcats, the ill-fated filly Ruffian and the esteemed Secretariat were her favorites. While not accomplished at the game, she nonetheless recorded two holes-in-one at Hidden Hills Country Club in Jacksonville within a span of six weeks. Nan was a loving sister, a caring aunt, a loyal friend, an accomplished cook, an avid gardener and she loved to travel, particularly the Scottish highlands. Nan greatly treasured her immediate and extended family. No man has ever had a more loving and devoted wife, a better consul or a more supportive partner with whom to share his life.
Nan leaves behind her husband, Dan of Rochester, Minnesota; her sister, Suzanne Bailey Busse of Louisville, Kentucky; her brother, Timothy Wayne Bailey of Lexington, Kentucky; 2 nieces, 3 nephews, 3 grandnieces and 2 grandnephews.
