Mildred T. Slawson, 89, of Rochester, Minnesota passed away on March 22, 2013 at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester.
Mildred ("Millie") Theresa Slawson was born on December 20, 1923, on a farm near Kellogg, Minnesota. She was the seventh of eleven children born to Marie (Gludt) and Martin Murphy. She attended country grade school, Kellogg High School and graduated from Lourdes High School in 1942.
In 1943, she married Wilbur Slawson, a medic in the 95 th Division of General Patton's Third Army. They were married for 15 years and had 6 children together.
She worked at several well-known restaurants in the Rochester area, including Michael's and the Kahler Hotel and was the food service director at Christ United Methodist Church before finally retiring at the age of 75.
Millie was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church at the time of her death, and was a past member of St. Francis Catholic Church and Resurrection Catholic Church. She belonged to many groups and organizations within each church.
Millie enjoyed travelling. She travelled throughout the United States and to Ireland, England, Wales, Italy, Croatia, Bosnia and Yugoslavia during her lifetime.
Millie had a true passion and skill for making candy and baking cheesecakes. She published a book of her cheesecake recipes and made box after box of chocolates for her friends and family. Millie will be forever remembered for her pecan turtles, toffee and cheesecakes. Millie also enjoyed playing cards, reading, gardening and writing short stories and poetry.
Millie is survived by five children: Richard Slawson of Juno Beach, FL; Diane (Thomas) Nogosek of Apple Valley, MN; David (Edie) Slawson of West Linn, OR; Barbara (Raymond) Schimek of Hayfield, MN; Theresa (Ralph) Dehning of Aitkin, MN; Twelve grandchildren, Alex Slawson, Scott Slawson, Paul Nogosek, Kristine Nogosek, Shawnee Knight, Christopher Slawson, Benjamin Schimek, Sarah Schieck, Matthew Schimek, Rachel Schimek, Michelle Dehning, Christopher Dehning; Two brothers, Donald (Lorraine) Murphy, Conception, MN; Robert Murphy, Lake City, MN; One sister, Marcella Osborne, Coon Rapids, MN; 12 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews and her dear friend Mae Defosse. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Linda K. Slawson, her parents, five sisters Dorothy Harlan, Mary Majerus, Eleanor Rasmussen, Eileen Miller, and Margaret Murphy; two brothers Bill and Gerald Murphy.
The funeral Mass for Millie will be at 12:00pm, Monday March 25, 2013 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Rochester with Rev. Don Schmitz officiating. Burial will be in St. Peter and Paul cemetery, rural Kellogg, MN. The visitation will be from 5:00pm – 8:00pm on Sunday at River Park Chapel, Macken Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday.
