Some people move quietly through life – our Marta never did. She embraced every day with an open heart, an adventurous spirit, and a determination to make the most out of what life placed before her. Whether she was surrounded by family and friends, tending to flowers, watching the moon glow, taking pictures of birds or simply sharing a laugh with someone she loved, Marta understood that life's greatest gifts were found in its simplest moments.

 Born on September 13, 1963, in Rochester, Minnesota, Marta was called home on July 27, 2026, in the city where her story began. Marta was a proud “Manor Girl.” She attended Harriet Bishop and Central Junior High and graduated from John Marshall in 1982. Marta made many lifelong friends through her job at Schmidt Printing. She then found her true calling when she started volunteering and subsequently working for The Arc Minnesota where she has been passionately advocating for those with disabilities for close to 25 years. 

Though her time with us feels far too short, the love she gave and the memories she created will continue to bloom in the hearts of all who knew her. Marta found beauty everywhere. She had a special love for flowers, animals (even insects!), dancing, sea glass, and the quiet peace of nature. One of her happiest places was at Mac’s Campground, where life seemed to slow down just enough to enjoy the people around her, the fresh air, and another beautiful sunset.

 If there was one thing Marta loved even more than the outdoor landscape, it was family and friends. She never missed an opportunity to gather with those she loved. Whether it was a family reunion, cheering on her nieces and nephews, sharing stories (with the most perfect memory!) or spending an ordinary afternoon together, Marta understood that time should never be wasted. 

Like all of us, Marta was wonderfully human. She wasn't afraid to speak her mind; and if she disagreed with you, chances are you knew it. That honesty was part of who she was, making her love and loyalty all the more meaningful. Marta was passionate about human rights, and we loved her for it. She was fiercely committed to supporting those who were silenced or ignored and was never hesitant to speak out on their behalf.

 Marta was a devoted daughter and loving sister. She enjoyed numerous activities with her parents and helped care for them for many years. The tight bond she shared with her three sisters-Denise, Karla and Elise-was filled with laughter, unwavering support and countless cherished memories.

 Above all else was the love she shared with her husband and soulmate, Robert. Some love stories seem destined long before they begin. Marta and Robert shared that kind of love – a partnership rooted in friendship, devotion, unwavering commitment, and most importantly, laughter. They walked through life hand in hand, celebrating its joys and carrying one another through its hardships. Their love was evident to everyone fortunate enough to witness it. And…if you knew Marta and Robert, you knew Lily. Wow. This 4-legged girl was, and is, their world.

 Marta was preceded in death by her father, Leif "Curly" Bollesen and her father-in-law, David Milliken Sr. She is survived by her husband, Robert Milliken; her beloved dog, Lily; her mother, Joy Bollesen; her sisters, Denise (Bob Berggren) Bollesen, Karla Bollesen, and Elise (Rob) Cothern; her mother-in-law, Judy Milliken; as well as nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends whose lives were enriched by knowing her. 

Memorials are appreciated to The Arc Minnesota and Paws and Claws Rochester. We will be celebrating Marta on her birthday weekend: September 12, 2026 from 1pm to 4pm at Mac’s Park Place. Marta taught us that life is meant to be lived fully, that laughter should be shared often, that nature has a way of healing the soul, and that the people we love are life's greatest treasures. The flowers she planted will bloom again. The moon will still rise. The gatherings will continue. And each of those moments will quietly remind us of the woman whose joyful spirit made them all just a little brighter.
