Marlys Lorraine Savage (Whelpley) – Rochester

Marlys Lorraine Savage, 85, of Rochester MN, died Saturday, Sept. 3, of natural causes.

Marlys was born in Madison, SD on July 15, 1926, daughter of Harry and Marion Whelpley.  She graduated from high school in Davis, SD, in 1944. She then attended Yankton college (SD) where she was Miss Pioneer (homecoming queen) and obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in English in 1948. She married Harry H. Savage in 1949 and had three children. After teaching in various locations and acquiring her Masters Degree in English/Reading from the University of Northern Iowa in 1972, she accepted a teaching position in Rochester, MN.  Marlys was a devoted English/Reading teacher for 19 years at Kellogg Junior High School until her retirement in 1991.

A few of her passions included family, reading, traveling, and animals – especially her little dog Maxwell.  Her love and kindness, and words of encouragement will be severely missed.

Survivors include two sons, Howard and Brian Savage, and one daughter, Cheryl Savage, all of Rochester; one sister, Muriel (Marvin) Lieske of Surprise, AZ.  Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harry H. Savage in 1995.

Memorial services will be held Friday, Sept. 9, at 11 a.m. at Macken Funeral Home River Park Chapel in Rochester with Rev. Lester Horntvedt officiating, preceded by a one hour visitation from 10-11 a.m.  Interment will be at the Oakwood Cemetery, followed by a luncheon.
