Obituary

Margaret "Peg" Kenan passed away on Saturday, October 22, 2016 at Rochester Methodist Hospital.  Margaret Leo Kenan was born in Havana, Cuba on August 5, 1941 to James "Leo" Kenan and Mary Theresa (McLaughlin) Kenan.  Peg spent the first three years of her life in Havana until her family moved to Pittsburgh, PA during her father's illness and death, and subsequently to Rochester, MN.

Peg attended St. John's Catholic grade school and graduated from Lourdes High School in 1959.  Following graduation Peg enrolled in the St. Mary's School of Nursing and graduated in 1962.  Peg then took to the road and experienced life in several different areas of the country.  Between 1963 and 1970 she worked as a registered nurse in Washington, DC; Miami, FL; and Chicago, IL.  In 1970, Peg returned to Rochester where she worked as a head nurse on 2-Domitilla at St. Mary's Hospital; a supervisor in General Service; and later in the Department of Gastroenterology at Mayo Clinic.  Peg retired from Mayo in 2001 after 30 ½ years of service.  After "retiring," Peg worked as a receptionist at Madonna Towers and was currently employed at the Pathway House.

Peg is survived by her sister, Mary Clare (Kenan) Doran, Rochester, MN; brother-in-law, Thomas Greene, Boulder, CO; nieces, Theresa (Mel) Luck; Colleen (Doug) Akerley; Deberah (Frank Keogh) Kemp; Peggy (Paul) Smith;  Bridget (Lance) Livingston; and nephews Bill (Sue) Doran; Timothy (Tana) Greene; Patrick (Hilary Kramsvogel) Greene; and Michael (Katherine) Greene.  Peg is also survived by 22 great-nieces and nephews; and nine, soon-to-be-ten, great-great nieces and nephews.  Peg was a treasured member of our family and will be missed.

Peg enjoyed golfing, going to the casino, watching sports, knitting, playing bridge, walking her dogs, family get-togethers, travel, reunions with her friends from 2-D, and having visitors.  Peg had a delightfully dry sense of humor, a heart of gold, and an inquiring mind.  When Peg's nieces were younger she coached the junior high girls' basketball team at St. Pius X School, an activity of which she was very proud and enjoyed immensely.  Peg also loved to travel to Boulder, CO to visit her sister Betty, brother-in-law Tom and their five children.  Peg was a founding member of St. Pius X Catholic Church.

Peg is preceded in death by her parents, Leo and Mary Kenan; sister, Elizabeth "Betty" Greene; and brother-in-law, Henry "Hank" Doran.  A visitation will take place at Macken Funeral Home, River Park Chapel on Thursday, October 27, 2016 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., followed by a reciting of the rosary for those who wish to participate.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Fr. Charlie Collins at St. Pius X Catholic Church on Friday, October 28, 2016 at 10:30 a.m.  There will be a visitation one hour prior to the service.  Burial will be at St. Clement's Cemetery in Hammond, MN.  Memorials may be directed to the Lourdes Foundation's Hank Doran/Kenan Memorial Scholarship Fund; Channel One Food Bank; Mayo Clinic's Poverello Foundation; or Paws and Claws Humane Society.

May the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.  Amen.
