Obituary

Mao Sao, 57, of Rochester, died on May 8, 2019 at his residence.

Mao was born January 4, 1962 in Battambang, Cambodia to Savin and Sareoun (Ham) Sao. As a young man, he attended school in Cambodia and at the age of 20, he emigrated to the United States to Rochester. Mao graduated from Mayo High School. Following high school, he began working as a cook at various restaurants in Rochester. He later worked for Jenni-O Turkey Inc. and was employed as a furniture-finisher for Halcon Furniture of Stewartville at the time of his passing.

Mao was a quiet, hard working man. He may not have said many words, but all those around him knew that he loved them, especially his grandchildren. His grandchildren were the light of his life.

He is survived by his wife, Hoeun Thou of Rochester; his mother and father; his children, Vanntha Thou, Chhunheang Thou, Phavy Thou, Shelley Aziminia, Marita Thou, and Marni Thou; his siblings, Savy, Savath, Liam, Leab, Lerth, Saveoun, Savong, Cindy, Savonn, and Mony; and eighteen grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his biological mother; and a granddaughter, Angelina.

A Buddhist funeral ceremony for Mao will be held from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. Friday, May 17, 2019 in the River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home. Following cremation, his remains will be interred at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 18, 2019 in the Oakwood Cemetery Chapel Columbarium in Rochester.
