Leona Rose Fisher Smith passed away March 22, 2013, one day shy of her 91 st birthday at the Homestead in Rochester.
She was born in Spillville, Iowa and worked in Mason City, Iowa as a medical secretary. On June 12, 1948, she married Richard J. Smith and they celebrated 59 years of marriage together. Dick passed away January 3, 2008.
Lee was a master organizer and was known for her extensive "lists". This talent led her to many leadership positions at which she excelled, including President of Assisi Heights Volunteers, Director of St. Marys Hospital Auxiliary, President of St. Pius X Parish Council and Super-Regional Couple of Teams of Our lady, which allowed Dick and Lee to travel to Europe 29 times.
Dick and Lee were very active at St. Pius X Church where they were Eucharistic Ministers. Their spirituality dominated their lives and influenced many others.
Lee had a zest for life, a great sense of humor and was willing to try anything, including deep sea fishing and riding camels in Egypt. She loved country western and polka music and danced every chance she had. She enjoyed speaking Czech with her sisters and embraced her Czech heritage.
Lee was a wonderful mother to her seven children and enjoyed making their favorite meals when they visited and at Christmas would make everyone's favorite cookies per their extensive requests.
Lee is survived by her seven children; Rick (Kathy), Dr. Mark (Annette), Dr. Tom (Karen), Mary, Martha (David) Shadid, John (Lisa) and Dr. Pete (Brittney); 17 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband Dick.
Memorials are suggested to St. Pius X Catholic Church, Lourdes High School and the Mayo Hospice Program.
