John “Johnny”
Liegl
January 10, 1932 – March 17, 2026
John "Johnny" Andrew Liegl, 94, of Rochester, MN, passed away peacefully at sunrise on March 17, 2026 at Cottagewood Senior Communities. Johnny was born in Rochester on January 10, 1932, to Ione (Collins) and Andrew Liegl. He graduated from Rochester High School in 1950.
At the age of 18, Johnny proudly enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. After returning to Rochester, he dedicated 44 years to the Mayo Clinic where he retired as a Unit Supervisor in the Department of Radiology. Throughout his life, countless memories were made while traveling with his wife, Jean, and their family. His love for the color red was a signature part of who he was. He enjoyed many interests and hobbies including cheering for the St. Louis Cardinals (Go Redbirds!), driving his newest car, attending airshows, following the weather, reading, and spending time with their beloved dogs. Above all, family was the most important to Johnny. His humor, pranks, and storytelling will be forever missed by everyone who knew him.
Johnny was preceded in death by his loving wife, Jean. They were united in marriage on July 5, 1952, and shared 71 wonderful years together until her passing in 2023. Together, they raised a wonderful family of five daughters: Christine (Les) Johnson of Stewartville, Karen (Robert) Volden of Rochester, Mary (David) Schultz of Stewartville, Colleen Berg of Rochester, and Andrea (David) Wilson of Rochester. Their family grew to include 11 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. Johnny is survived by his brother, James Liegl, and preceded in death by his parents and sister, Mary Fehrenkamp.
The Funeral Service for Johnny will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, March 28, 2026, in the River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home. Visitation will take place prior to the service from 9:30–11:00 am in the River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home. Burial will follow the luncheon at the Mazeppa Catholic Cemetery.
