The Funeral Mass for John F. Bruning will be 10:00am, Friday, August 28, 2015 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church with the Rev. Thomas Loomis officiating. Visitation will be 5:00pm – 7:00pm, Thursday, August 27, 2015 in the River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday. American Legion Post 92 will provide Military Rites at the church following the service. Burial will at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Preston, MN.
John Francis Bruning, 86, of Rochester, died peacefully in the early morning hours of August 24, 2015 at the Homestead in Rochester, MN.
He was born March 12, 1929 in St. Cloud, MN to Ray and Eva (Hirt) Bruning. He was the youngest of 5 children and the last surviving sibling. He graduated from Cathedral High School in St. Cloud in 1947. He continued his education at St. John's University, Collegeville, MN and transferred to St. Cloud State where he graduated with a business degree in May 1951. Right out of college he entered the U.S. Military Service. He was a Sergeant in the Army and served his time in the Korean War from 1951-1953. He returned to the States and started working for Western Electric in St. Paul. There he met Phyllis (Pam) and they were married on December 26, 1955. They moved to Omaha for three years before moving to Rochester to work for IBM in 1960. He retired from IBM in 1990.
John was co-chair of the Building Committee for both Pax Christi and Holy Spirit Catholic Churches in Rochester. He was a member of the Elk Lodge and Knights of Columbus. He loved to fish, hunt, garden, golf and play cards. He also enjoyed spending time with his family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
John is survived by his wife Pam and two daughters; Jane (Rocky) McCaleb of Rochester and Sandy(Rick) Hagen of Cresco, IA; grandchildren, Bryan (Alissa) McCaleb of Rochester, Kevin (Jennifer) McCaleb of Indian Rocks Beach, FL, Jacob Hagen of Seattle WA and Ryan Hagen of Cedar Falls, IA; great-grandchildren, Alexandra, Jaxson and Brayden McCaleb of Rochester and Colin McCaleb of Indian Rocks Beach Fl. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Ann Marie and grandson, Nicholas Lee Hagen.
In lieu of flowers the family would prefer memorials to Mayo Clinic for Alzheimer research.
