Joe L. Levy, 101, of Rochester, MN died Monday, September 21, 2026, at Madonna Towers surrounded by his family.

Joe was born February 3, 1925, in Monroe, LA to Dewey and Peggy (Ruff) Levy. His family moved to Coffeyville, KS when he was 9 months old. He graduated from Field Kindley High School in 1942.

He attended Coffeyville Junior College for one year and then enlisted in the Marine Corps on July 9, 1943 at the age of 18. He proudly and courageously served our country in the Pacific Theatre during World War II.

After his military discharge in 1946, Joe finished college at the University of Kanas where he was a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. In the summer of 1949, Joe met and started dating his future wife Patsy Pote while working at the Red Cloud Inn in Cascade, CO. Pat dared Joe to marry her during a 1950 New Year’s Eve outing with close friends. They loaded up a car, traveled to Huntsville, AR and eloped on January 1, 1951. Joe subsequently graduated from KU School of Law in Spring, 1951. Joe and Pat were happily married for over 75 years.

Joe and Pat moved to Coffeyville in summer of 1951 where he established a law practice and also served as Police Judge, City Attorney, and acting City Manager. In 1970, he joined two colleagues to form a law firm that still exists today.

Joe was a very civic-minded person. During his 50 years of practicing law in Coffeyville, he served on the boards of the Red Cross, USD 445 Board of Education, American Bar Association, First United Methodist Church, and Bank IV. He also served as President of Coffeyville Chamber of Commerce.

One of his proudest community achievements was being a founding member of the Coffeyville Community College Foundation in 1986. The Foundation has grown to over $25M today.

Joe loved attending KU basketball games in Allen Fieldhouse, playing golf, attending Marine Corps reunions, spending time at the family cabin in “God’s Country” (Colorado), and most of all, spending time with his family.

He is survived by his wife, Pat Levy of Rochester, MN, son David (Karin) of Colorado Springs, CO, daughter Elizabeth (Tom) Canan of Rochester, MN; four granddaughters; three great grandchildren; a brother, Jerry Levy and sister, Janice Edmondson, both of Lawrence, KS. He was preceded in death by his beloved grandson Will Canan in 2012.

A Celebration of Life will be held on November 14, 2026, at 1:30pm at Madonna Towers in Rochester, MN.
