Janetta "Jean" Kenning, age 77, of Rochester, MN, passed away peacefully on Monday December 6, 2010, at Golden Living Center in Rochester, MN . Born in Pocahontas, Iowa on August 13, 1933, she graduated from Sacred Heart Catholic School, Pocahontas, Iowa. She married John "Jack" Bernard Kenning at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Pocahontas, Iowa, September 5, 1953. They moved to farm in Spring Valley, MN, in 1960 where she and Jack raised seven children. She worked as a cook for the Head Start program. She also served for 8 years on the Spring Valley School Board. Later she moved to Rochester, MN, where she resided for several years. She worked as an LPN at nursing homes in Rochester, including Bethany Samaritan. Her hobbies included playing cards, reading, Red Hat Society, sewing, cooking, watching movies with friends and family, doting on her grandchildren, gardening, and doing crafts. The Catholic Church was very important to her and she served for many years as a lay Eucharistic Minister and on the Ladies Auxiliary at St. Ignatius Church in Spring Valley and later at Pax Christi Church in Rochester. She was also a member of the Secular Franciscans Order.
Survivors include three daughters and four sons. Mary (Tom Furey) Kenning-Furey, of Minneapolis, MN; Dale (Mary) Kenning of Dallas TX; Theresa (Jerry) Keenan of Atlantic, Iowa; Linda (Vincent Dominguez-Schugt) Kenning of St Paul, MN; Charles (Norma) Kenning of Racine, MN; Ronald (Karla) Kenning of Eagan, MN; and Michael (Akiko Kawamura) Kenning of Tokyo, Japan; one sister Lorraine (Bill) Brekke; 13 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews . She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Kenning; two sons, Timothy and Joseph; a sister, Frances Williams of Storm Lake, Iowa; and five half siblings.
A funeral mass will be celebrated at Pax Christi Church in Rochester at 11 a.m. on Friday, December 10, 2010. Visitation will be one hour prior to the funeral at the church. Interment will be Saturday, December 11, 2010 at 1 p.m. at St. Thomas Catholic Cemetery, Manson, Iowa.
