Ingeborg “Inge”
C. Emslander M.D.
July 4, 1924 – June 30, 2018
Ingeborg (Inge) Claire Emslander, peacefully passed away at home in Rochester, MN surrounded by her family on Saturday, June 30, 2018.
Ingeborg was born on July 4, 1924 in Rommerskirchen, Germany and christened Clara Maria Ingeborg Nesseler, the 5 th daughter of ten children born to Winand and Agnes Nesseler. After moving to the US, she changed her name to Ingeborg Claire which was the name her parents had originally wished for.
Ingeborg grew up in Germany and attended Ahrweiler High School and Medical School in Freiburg und Heidelberg. She came to the United States for her internship in 1954, went back to Germany in 1955 and began her residency, but returned in 1956 to complete her medical training in the US.
She met her husband Richard Emslander, who was also from Germany, through a mutual friend in New Jersey, were engaged 6 months later and were inseparable thereafter. They moved to Rochester, MN in 1959 for Dr. Emslander to train at the Mayo Clinic, were married on January 23, 1960 in Rommerskirchen, Germany and had one daughter, Hildegard Claire.
Dr. Nesseler practiced psychiatry until 1990, but her priorities were always at home. Her nicknames were Inge, Mama, Oma, and Tante Inge. Her passions included traveling with her husband (she has been to all six continents), gardening, photography, cooking, and most of all being with her family and her dogs (wire-haired dachshunds). She liked her steak very rare and lemon cake for her birthday.
Inge was an active member of St. John's parish. She is survived by her husband Richard Emslander MD, her daughter Hildegard Emslander Ryan MD (Michael Ryan MD) of Jefferson City Missouri, and her grandchildren: Thomas, Claire, Camilla, and Nicholas Ryan. She was preceded in death by all of her 9 siblings.
