Obituary

Gordon Laurel Quandt Jr., 81, of Rochester, MN died Thursday February 22, 2024 at his home at Shorewood Senior Living. He fought a long, courageous battle with cancer and now rejoices in his victory with the Lord. He went home peacefully surrounded by his loving family. He is now truly touching the face of God.

Gordy, also known as Sonny, was born November 23, 1942 in Byron, MN to Gordon and Helen (Bruce) Quandt Sr. On January 18, 1964, he married the love of his life, Darlene Quandt (Gruhkle). He had the patience of a saint and treated her like a queen every day of their 60+ year marriage. He was a selfless, loving dad who doted on his children and coached their youth sports. There are numerous stories of his heroics as a father. Gordy was an avid hunter, fisherman, golfer, and gambler. His happy-place was up north, especially hunting or fishing with his son. He went on an annual fishing opener trip every year for over 65 years. He was a lifelong carpenter who owned his own construction company and also spent time working at both Weis and Benike Construction companies. He had his hands on many Rochester landmarks and built many homes in Rochester. He was known to say, "If a guy had a 2-by-4…". at the beginning of a sentence. He could build or fix just about anything. He and his wife spent winters in Lake Havasu City, AZ for 13 years. He enjoyed many trips to Las Vegas over the years and took many trips and cruises with his wife, daughter, son-in-law, grandkids, and great grandkids. He was patient, gentle, and kind, but also brave, strong, and tough as nails. We all thought he was invincible. He is a beloved grandpa and "Great Pa" who leaves his family with many, many cherished memories. He will be deeply missed every single day.

He is survived by his wife, Darlene Quandt of Shorewood in Rochester; his son, Bryan (Peggy) Quandt of Babbitt, MN; his daughter, Lori (Billy) Hansen of Rochester; his grandchildren, Amber (Tom) Runions, Jessica Hansen (Ryan Kriesel), Michelle Hansen, Craig Quandt (Gabby Hanson), Kasie Quandt (Craig Lasart); his great-grandchildren, Liam, Sawyer, Henry, Sydney, and Hattie; a sister, Beverly (Gary) Fruth; brothers, Richard (Terry) Quandt and Kevin Quandt. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gordon Quandt Sr. and Helen Quandt (Bruce); a son born sleeping, Chad Allen Quandt; brothers, Kenny Quandt and Greg Quandt; sister, Judy Tilford.
