Gordon John McCoy, 85 of Rochester died peacefully at Saint Mary's Hospital on October 4, 2017, with his family by his side.
Gordon was born in Rochester to Edmund and Gertrude (Cavanaugh) McCoy on October 24, 1931. He attended Lourdes High School in Rochester and graduated in 1950. He participated in a variety of sports while in high school and upon graduation he enlisted in the Navy and served during the Korean War 1950-1954. After serving, Gordy returned home to Rochester and started work at IBM where he retired after 36 years.
He married Mary Margaret Russell on October 27, 1956 and they made their home in Rochester, where they belonged to St. Pius X Catholic Church. He was also a member of the American Legion and Elks Club. He enjoyed playing softball and coaching sports with his children.
Gordon is survived by his wife of 61 years Mary; daughter Jody Magee (Kirk) of Dover, son Richard McCoy (Kris) of Rochester, son Kevin McCoy (Lori) of Victoria and daughter Patti Herber (Charlie) of Altura; 11 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents and one son, Steven.
Funeral services will be at 10:00 am on Friday, October 6 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church (11 4 th Avenue SW, Rochester MN) with his cousin, Rev. Msgr. Gerald Mahon officiating. Visitation will be will be one hour prior to the Mass Friday at the church. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Rochester.
