Gertrude "Gertie" Anne (Towey) Ulwelling, 82, of Rochester, joined her beloved husband in heaven, Friday August 27 th , 2021 at Methodist Hospital.
Gertrude was born on May 1 st , 1939, in Rochester to Arthur and Helen (St. George) Towey. She graduated from Lourdes High School in 1957. On April 23, 1960, she married the love of her life Donald J. Ulwelling at St. Francis Catholic Church in Rochester. The couple lived in Rochester then transferred with IBM to Brooklyn Center MN. Don became ill, so the family moved back to Rochester to be near Mayo Clinic. Don died on March 28, 1971.
Gertrude was a stay-at-home mother and did a great job raising her six children by herself. She re-entered the work force when her youngest started school. Gertrude was an in-home daycare provider for 30 years. She was an active member at St. Pius X for many years. She loved sewing and gardening and taking her children on summer vacations with her sister Eileen. She enjoyed spending time with her family, and especially loved being with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She is survived by her daughter Catherine (Katie) (William) Scott of Rochester. sons Joseph, John (Colleen) of Rochester, James (Peggy) of Pine Island, Thomas (Laurie) of Austin, and Robert (Bobbie) of Oronoco. Sister, Kate of Ormond Beach, FL. brothers, Bill (Jennette) of Rochester, Pat (Debbie) of Hayfield, Dan of Blaine, MN, Tim (Sandy) of Schertz, TX, and Joe of Cresco, IA. Sister-in-law Joyce Towey of Colby, KS.
14 Grand Children, 23 Great Grandchildren, 2 Great-Great Grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Donald, Infant twins Stephen and Mary, Parents Art and Helen Towey, sister Eileen, brother's Michael, Jerry (Marlene). Nephews James and Richard. Great grandchildren Christian and Inesa.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Pius X Catholic Church on Wednesday, September 8, 2021 at 12:00pm with the Rev. Msgr. Gerald A. Mahon officiating. Visitation will be held from 4:00PM to 7:00PM on Tuesday, September 7, 2021 in the River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home and will continue one half hour prior to the service at the church.
Burial will be at St. Bridget's cemetery in Simpson, MN.
Memorials may be given to donor's choice.
