Frederic N. Brown, age 83 passed away peacefully at his residence in Apple Valley, Minn. on May 7, 2014 after living with Alzheimer's for 10 years. He was preceded in death by his loving parents, Clarence and Eva (Norton) Brown, a daughter, Carrie Brown, a daughter-in-law, Kim Brown and two infant grandchildren. He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Carolyn (Walters) Brown and 6 children: Fritz Brown, Charles Brown, Nancy (Paul) Curry, David (Colette) Brown, Louise (Tom) Immen, and Jennifer Hodowanic. He is also survived by his 3 older siblings: a brother, Robert (Marie) Brown and two sisters, Barbara Austin and Elizabeth Brandt. In addition, 11 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren survive.
Fred was born in Rochester, MN on April 7, 1931. He attended St. John's Catholic school and graduated from Lourdes High School in 1949. He was awarded "All State" for his football achievements. Fred attended Notre Dame as well as The College of St. Thomas where he received his undergraduate degree in 1953. He joined the Marine Corps and became a 1st Lieutenant. Fred then attended the University of Minnesota Law School where he received his law degree.
Fred married Carolyn Walters on September 26, 1953 in Rochester where they began a life together raising their children. After working as an attorney in St. Paul for 2 years, they moved back to Rochester where he founded his own law practice. One year later, Richard Bins joined him and they successfully practiced in their firm of Brown and Bins for many decades.
Fred had many interests and hobbies, all of which centered around activities with his family. He loved spending time on the Mississippi River: boating, camping, duck hunting, bird watching and hiking. He also enjoyed golfing, traveling with his wife Carolyn in their motor home, listening to jazz music, and spending as much time as he could with his family. After retiring, Fred and Carolyn moved to Wabasha where they could enjoy the Mississippi River life on a full-time basis.
Fred's other professional achievements include positions as President of the Olmsted County Mental Health Association, President of the Rochester Chapter of the University of Minnesota Alumni Association, and President of the Third District Bar Association. He did extensive volunteer work for St. John's Catholic Church, the Oakwood Cemetery, and the Serra Club.
A Funeral Mass will be held Monday, May 12, 2014 at 10:30AM at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Rochester with Msgr. Gerald Mahon officiating. Visitation is one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
