Obituary

The Funeral Mass for Duane T. Melvin will be at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 2, 2017 at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Rochester with the Rev. Msgr. Thomas Melvin as the celebrant. Burial will be in St. Joachim Cemetery in Plainview, MN following the Funeral Mass. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Byron Funeral Home, Byron, MN. Please note the change of location for the visitation on Friday. Byron Funeral Home 1620 Voll Drive NW Byron, MN. Wake prayer service will be held at 7:00 p.m. Friends may also call one hour prior to the funeral Mass at St. Francis Church, Rochester on Saturday.

Mr. Melvin, 91, of Rochester, MN died Tuesday, August 29, 2017.  Duane was born November 23, 1925 in Plainview, MN to Harry and Grace McGrath Melvin.

Duane graduated from Plainview High School in 1944. He served in the United States Army from 1946-1948 serving in Japan as part of the occupation force after the end of World War II. He was assigned as the supervisor of the motor pool at Sugama Prison outside Tokyo. Sugamo Prison held Japanese war criminals awaiting trial. After his enlistment in the Army was completed, Duane worked in the oil fields of Southern California returning to the Plainview/Rochester area in the late 1950's.  It was at this time, he met his wife, Corinne Wenzel, and the two were married in 1963. The couple lived in Rochester and recently celebrated 54 years of marriage. Duane worked at Olmsted Community Hospital for over 30 years as the Supervisor of Building and Grounds. Duane was a 3 rd and 4 th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, a Charter Member of St. Francis of Assisi Council No. 14170 and held numerous offices including Faithful Navigator. He was also a member of the Golden K Kiwanis Club in Rochester.

Survivors include his wife, Corinne; two sons, Rev. Msgr. Thomas Melvin (Winona) and Richard Melvin, Ph.D. and his wife, Dana Collins, Ph.D. (Duluth); two brothers, Everett Melvin (Edina) and Patrick Melvin (Plainview); as well as 21 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Earl Melvin (California).

Duane was an avid fisherman, golfer and photographer.

Memorials are preferred to St. Francis of Assisi Parish, Rochester, MN, Immaculate Heart of Mary Seminary, Winona, MN and Mayo Hospice-Rochester.
