Obituary

Dorothy F. Hills, age 94 of Rochester died on Saturday, February 9, 2013 at Shorewood Assisted Living.

Dorothy was born December 10, 1918 in Appleton, Minnesota to Arthur and Cora Hills. Dorothy graduated from Appleton High School in 1937. She then worked as a dental assistant to Doctor's Robert and David Miller in Appleton, Minnesota.

Dorothy left Appleton in 1946, taking a position at Northwestern Bell Telephone Company in Willmar, Minnesota. She held several positions with Northwestern Bell at Willmar, Ortonville, Wadena, and Rochester Minnesota. She was with the company for 34 years, retiring in 1981.

Dorothy was well traveled. Many vacations were spent hunting, fishing, and at the Miller cabin. She was an avid hunter and sportswoman, taking many trips to Alaska for salmon fishing, to Wyoming hunting big game, and on Canadian fishing trips. She had visited every state in the union, traveling to Europe, Mexico, Canary Islands, and eight Caribbean Islands. Dorothy was a member of First United Methodist Church of Appleton, Minnesota and involved at Christ United Methodist Church in Rochester, Minnesota. She belonged to the Telephone Pioneers and WA-TAN-YE service club for many years.  In 2002 Dorothy moved from her home on Valhalla Ct. NW, Rochester to Buena Vista Condominiums. She had resided since 2010 at Shorewood Assisted Living.

Survivors are her sister Marjorie and Donald Erickson of Chokio, Minnesota, twelve nieces and nephews, including Jay and Marla LeFebre of Rochester, Jerry and Ruby Halvorson and Rolland and Nancy Moen all of Appleton, forty-five grand nieces and nephews, in whose lives she was very involved, many great-great nieces and nephews also survive as well as special friends Eileen and Gary Melin, and the Miller nieces and nephews. Dorothy took great pride in her nieces and nephews and was very close to all of them.

Dorothy is preceded in death by her parents, sisters Opal, Maybelle, Viola, Ruby, a brother Lloyd and special friend Dr. David P. Miller.

The family wishes to extend sincere thanks and appreciation to Eileen Melin for the loving care given to Dorothy over the past six years. Also many thanks to the staff at Shorewood Assisted Living for making Dorothy a part of their family over the last three years. We also thank Season's Hospice for their care to Dorothy and her family in her final days.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be directed to Shorewood Assisted Living, First United Methodist Church, Appleton MN or Season's Hospice.

The funeral service for Dorothy will be held at 11:00AM on Wednesday, February 13, 2013 in the River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home with Pastor Mark Woodward officiating. Visitation will be held from 6:00PM to 8:00PM on Tuesday, February 12, 2013 in the River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home and one hour prior to the funeral service. Burial will be in the Appleton, Minnesota City Cemetery at a later date.
