Obituary

Deborah Ann (Calhoun) Vreeman – wife, mother, grandmother, and friend- died peacefully on Wednesday, August 28th, 2024 surrounded by family at Mayo Clinic Hospital, St. Marys Campus.

Deb was born August 10th, 1960 in San Juan, Puerto Rico to Donald Calhoun and Ann Wranich. She grew up in Spring Valley, MN and was raised by her grandmother, Frieda Calhoun. This is where she met the love of her life, Scott Vreeman. Deb graduated from Spring Valley High School in 1978. On June 30th 1979 Deb and Scott were joined in marriage. They established roots in Rochester, MN where they raised three wonderful sons: Nicholas, Nathan, and Niles. She started her career as a daycare provider, then obtained a degree in accounting. Deb worked for Gauthier Industries until her retirement in 2008.

Over the years Deb enjoyed gardening, sewing, crafting, and baking. But most of all she loved spending time with her grandchildren. She had a strong faith and was a devoted member of Ascension Lutheran Church. Deb battled pulmonary fibrosis for many years until she received a double lung transplant in 2019. She later became treasurer of a non-profit charity (Breathing New Life) that helps survivors like her.

Deb is survived by her husband, Scott, three sons, Nick (Lisa), Nate (Liz), and Niles (Cristine), siblings Rhonda Schild, Rick Powers, and Merle Light, her four grandchildren (Makenzie, Elise, Carson, and Nora) with another grandchild on the way, and many friends and extended family.

She is preceded in death by grandmother, Freida, parents, mother Ann, father Donald, and stepmother Dorthea, mother and father-in-law, Everett and Ethel Vreeman, and her grandsons Braden & Jaden Vreeman.

She died as she lived, with grace and surrounded by love. Her kindness and generosity will be greatly missed.

The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 4th, 2024, at Ascension Lutheran Church with Pastor Brian Kom officiating. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 3rd, 2024, in the River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral and one hour prior to the service on Wednesday. Burial will be in the Oakwood Downtown Cemetery following the funeral service.

In lieu of monetary donations, the family recommends donating to the Breathing New Life organization that Deb was so involved in, or LifeSource who helped provide her new lungs.
