David Lane Kurtzhals, 65, of Rochester, died unexpectedly on Thursday, April 8, 2010, at Mercy Medical Center Hospital in Clinton, Iowa.

He was born on January 25, 1945, to Roy and Mabel (Jones) Kurtzhals in Rice Lake, Wisconsin. David graduated from Rice Lake High School in 1963. That same year, he enlisted in the United States Army and served in the 3 ^rd Armored Division in (West) Germany.

On October 28, 1978, in Minneapolis, David married Susan Kohlmeyer. They moved to Rochester in 1981.

David drove a semi-trailer truck, and he worked as a truck driver for over forty years. Most recently, David was employed by Keith Carlson Trucking in Goodhue, Minnesota. In his lifetime, David drove more than four million miles.

David's beloved dog, Katy, was his faithful companion both at home and in the truck. Every weekend he took Katy to the dog park to play with the other dogs.

David was a long-time member of Rochester Assembly of God church. He served as an usher and as a driver for the church van ministry.  He looked forward to family gatherings, and he often amused friends and family with his dry humor. David was an avid reader. His reading interests included the Bible, history, biographies, and current events. He rode his bicycle frequently and played table tennis.

David is survived by his wife Susan; his three children, Aaron, Elsa, and Joel, all of Rochester; his sister Lois Carlson of Cameron, Wisconsin; six nephews and five nieces. He is preceded in death by his parents and two sisters: Fay DeRousseau and Marilyn Johnson.

A funeral service is planned for Wednesday, April 14, 2010 at 10:30AM at Rochester Assembly of God Church with Pastor Bruce Kallies, and pastor Ernie Gafkjen officiating.  Visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 13, 2010 from 5:00PM to 8:00PM at Macken Funeral Home, and one hour prior to services at the church. Burial will be in Grandview Memorial Gardens Cemetery, with military honors provided by American Legion Post 92.

Memorials are preferred to Rochester Assembly of God church, or the American Red Cross.
