Darlene Martha (Koger) Poch, age 91, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 4, 2026, at the Stewartville Care Center.

Darlene was born on February 13, 1935, to Leo and Eva (Thielbar) Koger in Dundas, Minnesota. She enjoyed growing up in the small town of Dundas with a huge woods to the east of their home and the Cannon River to the west. Darlene helped care for her younger siblings and had many funny memories to share from that time. All six children, including Darlene, were natural-born leaders, which led to much bantering, teasing, hijinks and most of all love and fun!

When Darlene was 13 years old she nearly lost her life to a year-long struggle with osteomyelitis of her right leg. Doctors said she would most likely never walk again without crutches. However, Darlene was walking independently within months and went on to enjoy roller skating throughout her school years.

She graduated from Northfield High School in 1953. Upon graduation, she received a full scholarship to Winona State University to pursue a career in teaching. Darlene’s plans for college changed after meeting the love of her life—at the roller rink!—and marrying Gerhardt Poch in Faribault, Minnesota, on June 26, 1954.

After their marriage, the couple was stationed in Fulda, Germany, while Gerhardt served two years of active duty. They lived with a host family, and remained in touch ever since. During their time in Germany, Darlene and Gerhardt connected with Gerhardt’s German-born mother’s family, building a lasting connection that remained meaningful with visits, phone calls, and letters throughout their lives. Darlene’s two oldest grandchildren were fortunate to meet their host family along with several extended family members in Germany in 2002.

On September 7, 1958, Darlene gave birth to their only child, Gary, who was their greatest joy. They always hoped to have more children and never stopped trying to grow their family, but Gary remained their only child. He was deeply loved and brought them a lifetime of happiness, pride, and beautiful memories.

Darlene worked as a receptionist and switchboard operator for Northern States Power in Faribault for more than 14 years. The family lived in Faribault until 1973, when their wholesale food distribution business brought them to Rochester, Minnesota. Darlene worked in the family business as the bookkeeper for many years while her husband and son drove the routes.

After retirement, Darlene worked part-time in a hotel grocery store, where she met people from all over the world who were staying in Rochester for care at Mayo Clinic. Darlene loved people, making connections, and building relationships. She also enjoyed her years volunteering at Mayo Clinic, where she shared her knowledge of the clinic’s heritage and history.

Darlene’s hobbies included needlepoint, being in nature, bird watching, gardening, reading, being an active and involved member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, and spending time with family. She is also remembered for her large collection of strawberry themed items. She played an important role in raising two of her youngest grandchildren, who lived with her part-time. Darlene remained sharp and interested in current events, with a love of learning that continued throughout her life.

Darlene was a wonderful host who took great pride in creating a beautiful table setting and opening her home to family and friends. She had a gift for making people feel welcome and valued. She cherished the time spent around her table, sharing meals, playing cards and games, telling stories, laughing, and enjoying conversation with the people she loved.

There was nothing Darlene and Gerhardt loved more than spending time with their grandchildren and making memories together. Family was at the heart of Darlene’s life, and the love she gave to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren will remain a lasting part of her legacy.

Darlene was preceded in death by her husband, Gerhardt; her son, Gary; and her sisters, Dolores, Loretta, and Rosalie.

She is survived by her brothers, Bob (Lynn) Koger and Tom (Sandy) Koger; sister, Jean Klink; grandchildren, Bryce (Heidi Hendrickson) Poch, Gina Newell, Ethan (Katie Beagle) Poch, and Lauren Poch; and great-grandchildren, Aria and Reid Newell.

Darlene leaves behind a lifetime of love, memories, and connections with the many people whose lives she touched. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by her family and all who had the privilege of knowing her.

The memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, September 10, 2026, at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Rochester, MN. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service on Thursday. The burial will be in Meadow Ridge Memorial Park in Faribault, MN.
