Obituary

The funeral Mass of Christian Burial for Cyril "Cy" Veerkamp will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 21st, 2012 at St. Pius X Catholic Church of Rochester with Father Charlie Collins officiating.  Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Rochester.  Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 20th at River Park Chapel, Macken Funeral Home and one hour prior to service at the church.

Mr. Veerkamp, 81, of Rochester, Minnesota died Monday, June 18th, at Seasons Hospice following a 12 year battle with cancer.

Cy was born March 18, 1931 in Otteson, Iowa to Herman and Philomena (Hessler) Veerkamp.  He graduated from St. Cecilia's Academy in Algona, Iowa and served four years in the United States Navy.  On July 13, 1957 he married Darlene V. Jante at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Owatonna, MN.   The couple lived in Rochester their entire married life.

Cy worked as an Electrical Designer at IBM for 35 years, retiring in 1991.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Darlene, daughters; Susan (Dennis) Stehr of Elko New Market, MN and Nancy Veerkamp of Shoreview, MN, one brother; Al (Ethel) of Springfield, MO, five sisters; Katherine Schultz of Eagle Grove, IA, Rita Thilges of Algona, IA, Mary Martha Vaughters of Ft.Myers, FL, Patricia (Anthony) Slowinski of Austin, MN, Barbara (Paul) Slowinski of Owatonna, MN.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Karen Marie Veerkamp, parents Herman and Philomena Veerkamp, brothers; Herman, Norbert, Stanley and Ralph and sister Margaret Hitchings.

Cy loved to camp and fish in Northern Minnesota and was very proud of his garden and apple trees.
