Obituary

With his three sons by his side, Charles "Captain Charlie," "Weasel" Sedor Jr, peacefully passed to his field of dreams on Wednesday, June 6, 2018.

Charlie was born in Charleroi, PA on June 18, 1929. He graduated from Charleroi High School and pursued his dream of playing professional baseball. He signed a free agent contact with the St Louis Cardinal organization in 1949. Soon after, he decided to serve his country during the Korean War. He was sent to Wiesbaden, Germany where he proudly served his country along with playing baseball for 4 years. Upon his return he played professional baseball for 5 years. He proudly regaled going 8 for 8 for the Rocky Mount Leafs during a double header. He was equally as proud of his low strike out totals…which he told countless people. He may have made it to the major leagues but he couldn't consistently hit a curveball, as we liked to jokingly remind him. He made many dear friends during his baseball career- Otto Balmer being his closest buddy. In 1956, his friend, Freddy Hancock, persuaded him to move to Rochester to play in the Southern Minnie League for the Royals. He met his future wife, Kathleen Beckley, while working downtown. He asked her out a few times and she eventually relented to go to a hockey game with him. They married July 9, 1960; they were married for 57 years.

Charlie worked as a meter reader for Rochester Public Utilities for 32 years. His will also be remembered as a longtime, local baseball and softball umpire. Charlie and Kathy enjoyed square dancing as members of the Rolling Squares. As a result, he met countless people and made many lifelong friends. Friendships and family meant the most to Charlie. Once he knew you, he would never forget you and his charismatic personality struck you. Charlie loved his Pittsburgh Steelers, Pirates, Penguins and Wisconsin Badgers. He passed that passion onto his sons.

We were blessed with many valuable lessons from Charlie during his 88 years, among them: the gift of gab, being there for our friends, making friends with plumbers, electricians, carpenters…because dad had no fix-it skills, finding a sales bargain, making others smile, how to not hook up a camper to a car, paring Cheetos with wine spritzers, and the art of hitting a curveball.

Charlie was extremely loving of his wife Kathleen and sons Mike (fiancé Joanna Midthun and her daughter Mallory), Dave (Jeri Lynn Waller), and Dan (Karen, grandchildren Brad and Amanda). He is also survived by his beloved sisters Dorothy Yeager and Margie Di Carlo along with a large extended family. He was preceded in death by parents Anna and William Sedor.

Memorial donations may be made in Charlie's name to Minnesota Disabled American Veterans Chapter 28, PO Box 6226, Rochester, MN 55903.

A celebration of Charlie's life will be held Friday, June 15, from 4pm to 8pm at Macken Funeral Home River Park Chapel, Rochester, MN. Afterwards we will be at Beetle's Bar and Grill to continue the celebration.
