Arthur Handelman, a devoted husband, father, brother, friend, attorney, and community member, passed away on September 3, 2026.
Arthur grew up in the Chicago area and was a proud alumnus of North Shore Country Day School. He graduated from Connecticut College before earning his law degree from Emory University School of Law. After starting his law career in California, he returned to Chicago where he practiced as a trial lawyer and attained a Master of Health Law from Loyola University School of Law. He later shifted to focus on the changing energy landscape; he founded The Power Group and later joined Pyrophase.
Arthur loved gardening, planting wildflowers, and the outdoors. After he moved with his family to Rochester, Minnesota in 2011, he focused on preservation of the prairie habitat and native wildlife. His commitment to his community extended into public service. Arthur was a strong advocate for his homeowners association and joined the Rochester Township Planning and Zoning Commission in 2019 where he served as Chairman from 2021.
Above all, Arthur was devoted to his family, attending and photographing all of his children’s events. He also treasured and nurtured his friendships. He will be remembered for the genuine interest he took in people and for maintaining connections across his lifetime and across his interests including hockey and book club. He is survived by his wife, Tina Hieken; their two children, Haley and Owen; his sister, Lauren; and his mother and father, Phyllis and Chester.
A memorial service will be held October 4, 2026 at noon at the River Park Chapel, Macken Funeral Home, Rochester, MN, preceded by visitation at 11:00 am.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to The Nature Conservancy, the Minnesota Nongame Wildlife Program, a program through the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, or the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation, which focuses on pollinator conservation. This request reflects Arthur’s love of wildflowers and his desire to help preserve natural habitats for generations to come.
