Obituary

Dr. Arnold Lee Schroeter, of Rochester, age 82, died Thursday morning, Feb. 14, 2019, at Charter House.

Arnold was born April 27, 1936, in Chicago to Amelia Bertha Kuhlenkamp, a single mother. In 1942, he was adopted by his stepfather, George E. Schroeter. His mother died later in 1942, and he was placed in an orphanage. He was then raised by his aunt and uncle, Christine (Kuhlenkamp) Pedigo and B.H. Pedigo, in Jackson, Tenn. He attended Lambuth College from 1954 to 1956 before transferring to Southwestern at Memphis, where he graduated with a B.A. in Chemistry in 1958.

While at Southwestern, he met Linda Carol Hardesty, and the two were married on June 21, 1960, in Chattanooga, Tenn.

Arnold attended Medical School at University of Tennessee, Memphis, graduating in 1961. He then served an internship at Holston Valley Community Hospital in Kingsport, Tenn., in 1962. Subsequently, he worked for the Public Health Service at the CDC in Atlanta.

Dr. Schroeter was accepted as a resident in Internal Medicine at Mayo Clinic in Rochester in 1966. After a year in the program, he was convinced by Dr. Robert Kierland to become a resident in Dermatology. Invited to join the staff in Dermatology, he continued at Mayo for the next 16 years. In 1985, he moved to Dayton, Ohio, becoming the Chairman of Dermatology at Wright State Medical School. He returned to Mayo in 1994 to become Chair of Dermatology. He remained at Mayo until retirement in 2008.

Dr. Schroeter was active in teaching having helped many medical students as a professor and mentor. He was also an active researcher authoring more than 200 publications during his career.

Arnold had many interests outside of medicine. He was a longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church of Rochester, where he served as an Elder and Sunday school teacher. He loved wood-working, creating many cherished heirlooms. He was an accomplished photographer and was rarely found without his camera. He also enjoyed spending time at the family cabin in Outing, Minn., which he designed and built.

Arnold is survived by Linda, his wife of 58 years; their children, Alan (Melissa) Schroeter of Ely, Eric (Dawn) Schroeter of Pleasant Prairie, Wis., Laura (Bruce Pavalon) Schroeter of Los Angeles, and Steve (Jennifer) Schroeter of Columbus, Ohio; and eight grandchildren. He is also survived by his cousins, George Petty, M.D., of Rochester; Ben Pedigo of Ripley, Ohio; Claire Robison of Pittsburgh; and Clemence McCain-Noakes of Knoxville, Tenn.

The Schroeters would especially like to thank the Supportive Living Center of Charter House and Mayo Hospice. Their love and caring created a home for us during his last years.

Memorials are preferred to First Presbyterian Church of Rochester and Mayo Department of Dermatology.

The memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 13, 2019 at First Presbyterian Church. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.
