March 18, 1936 – September 30, 2017
Alvin Willis Hein, 81 of Rochester died peacefully at St. Mary's Hospital on September 30, 2017.
Al "Jr." was born in Rochester to Alvin and Edwina "Babe" Hein on March 18, 1936. He attended school in Rochester and graduated from Central High School in 1954. He married Ruth Gruenhaupt on December 29, 1957 at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Rochester. They were blessed with three children. Al retired from City of Rochester Park and Recreation Department after 47 years and was also a longtime member of the Rochester Eagles Club. Al loved spending time at the cabin in Wabasha, where he loved to fish and watch all the activity on the river. In his retirement, Al especially loved working for Bushel and Peck Apple Orchard near Lake City. He enjoyed watching his grandchildren play sports and they in turn loved listening to his many stories. Al's main hobby was woodworking, and many people still enjoy sitting in his famous rocking chairs.
Al is survived by his wife Ruth of 59 years, children David (Debi) Hein of New Ulm, Kristi (Lincoln Bauman) Hein of Rochester, Jeff (Shelly) Hein of Rochester, four grandchildren, Michael (Sarah), Miranda (Brad Kronback), Cole, Riley, two great-grandchildren Zamara and Sam and his sister Jo Ann (Mike) Vath of Farmington.
He is preceded in death by his parents and a half-sister.
