Alice Jane
Wagner
March 20, 1930 – June 11, 2012
Alice Jane Wagner, age 82, of Rochester, died on Monday, June 11, 2012, in her dream home that she designed, with her family by her side.
Alice Blattner was born on March 20, 1930, near Millville, MN, to Henry and Helen (Moechnig) Blattner. She graduated from Lincoln High School in Lake City, MN in 1948. She attended Methodist Kahler School of Nursing. She married Albert Olson of Millville on May 29, 1949. They had two sons, Earl and Lynn. Albert died in a farming accident in December of 1951. She then returned to nursing school where she met her husband Leo P. Wagner, graduating together in 1955. They were married on November 13, 1954, at St. John's Catholic Church in Rochester.
They resided in rural Rochester and also farmed on her family farm near Millville. She returned to college in 1980 when her youngest child was in high school and attained her BSN from Winona State University in 1984. She worked for Wabasha Public Health as a school nurse for 18 years, retiring in 1995. After retirement, she remained active volunteering in Mayo Medical Relief Missions and Haiti Mission for 27 years, craft shows with her husband, and the Rochester Downtown Farmer's Market. Alice received the Extraordinary Rochester Women Award from Rochester Women magazine in 2005. She and Leo received the Rochester Exchange Club Book of Golden Deeds Award in 1998 and the Bishop's Medal in 2007. She was a faithful and active member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church.
Alice's main love in life was spending time with her family, creating many memories. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, sewing, rock hunting, traveling and fishing. She was a strong supporter of education. She and Leo set up a college scholarship fund for their grandchildren.
She is survived by her husband Leo, four sons, Lynn of Rochester, Dan (Pam) and Peter (Joan) of Millville, and George (Jenny) of Faribault, and four daughters, Dianne of Rochester, Mary (Kevin) Richardson of New Orleans, LA, and Patty of Rochester, and Peggy (Ken) Scott of Rochester. Her grandchildren Heather, Nathan, Greg, Jacob, Timothy, Christopher, Keionne, Kevin, Molly, Jasmine, Zachary, Peter, Rachel, Sarah, Meredith, Joe, Elle, Cy, and Anna, all brought her great joy. She was also blessed with great-grandchildren Leo, Clara, Levi, Riley, Helen, and Lucy.
She was preceded in death by her first husband Albert, her son Earl in 1997, and her three siblings Howard, Byrl, and Lois.
A celebration of Alice's life will be held on Thursday, June 14, at 11am at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church with Rev. Mark McNea officiating. Memorial visitation will be held in the River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home on Wednesday, June 13, from 4-7pm and for one hour prior to services on Thursday at the church.
